

Dr Maknun Ashami left Eritrea and came to London in 1977. He has been a consultant for the World University Service and Ford Foundation in Sudan. His community work includes acting as an advisor to Band Aid; helping to set up AFFORD, the African Foundation for Development; work with Comic Relief; the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the City Parochial Foundation; and the Evelyn Oldfield Unit. He teaches International Development at Birbeck College, University of London.
Something that you miss in London is the sky. The other thing you miss in London is the space the space in the city are two things. I bet you know at night you don't see the stars here, unless you really make an effort, and there is no space.
I don't know maybe because I come from a nomadic group space is important. The constructions and all the buildings you know we need space to walk, to see, space is very important.
