About
Kurdish Association
The association was established for the benefit of Kurdish people in the UK:
- To advance education and knowledge in the fields of culture and language of the Kurdish people, and preserve and promote the heritage of the Kurdish nation.
- To relieve poverty by the provision of advice on such matters as immigration, social security, housing etc to those persons who are in need.
- To provide or assist in the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupations with the object of improving the conditions of life for the said persons.
The Kurds are a newly arrived community to the UK compared to other refugee communities. They have had a struggle to assert their cultural identity, for example in Home Office publications and government monitoring forms, Kurds are not counted for their ethnicity but registered as Iraqi, Iranian, Turkish, etc.
The Refugee Communities History Project will help to address this issue. It is also important that a community that is thought to number 70,000 in London is represented.
