Somalis were among the first refugees and migrants from Africa to arrive in the UK in the late 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. Somali men used to come to England as seafarers and settled in cities such as Cardiff, Bristol, Sheffield and Liverpool. That is why you will find a high number of Somalis in places like Cardiff.

The largest number of Somalis arrived in the UK in the mid 1980s and early 1990s due to the civil war in Somalia. The Somali population in the UK is estimated to be 200 - 300, 000.
