Refugee Stories
Mercedes Rojas

Mercedes Rojas came to the UK from Chile in 1977. She travelled with her husband, Oscar, who had been imprisoned by the Pinochet regime for his trade union activities. He was released after a campaign led by Amnesty International. Oscar later returned to Chile where he became one of the disappeared. Mercedes, already a qualified nurse, successfully re-qualified and now works as a district nurse in London.

Married to Prison, or Married in Exile

Mercedes Rojas

Well we married for a short period because we married in 72 and the coup happened in 73 was the time when Oscar was first arrested in September 73. And he spent three and a half year in prison. And after that his sentence, he was given a sentence and that was seven years in prison and that would exchange to exile.

So, because he came, obviously I came with him, so really the marriage life was that bit of period of marriage as well as when we came into England.
