Tamara Janjic

Tamara Janjic came to the UK in May 1992, after the Bosnian Serb forces besieged her home city of Sarajevo. Having been a qualified doctor in the Former Yugoslavia, Tamara worked as an au pair in London, and then took a Masters degree in Public Health. She is currently studying for a PhD at Imperial College.

Yeah, what happened is I was working at the time and I just--,my brother was in Holland, he left Sarajevo as well in '91 when war in Croatia started and his birthday is on the 2nd of April so I kind of went to see him for his birthday there. And never managed to come back, basically. What happened is I packed everything just for 14 days and went to see them, and then I remember as if it was today.

I had the ticket booked for the 26 April to go back to Sarajevo and we actually didn't know what was going on so I rang my mum to ask whether she would kind of pick me up from the airport and she said 'could you please turn the CNN on' which I did and then realised that actually it wasn't the time to go back.

So I stayed there for a month and then because I couldn't speak Dutch obviously, I didn't know what to do, I decided to come to England…
