Celebration of refugee's contributions to London Life
2nd September 2005
To mark the end of its first year the Refugee Communities History Project is holding a series of exciting exhibitions to celebrate the contributions that refugees in London have made to the city since 1951. Seven Refugee Community Organizations have taken part in the project in the first year; The Afghan Association of London, Bosnian Resource Information Centre and Kosovar Support, The Council for Assisting Refugee Academics, The Iraqi Community Association, The Kurdish Association, The Latin American Association, The Tamil Relief Centre. Each of these communities will be holding local exhibitions and events over the coming months to display the project's findings so far. These events will include a wonderful mixture of oral history exhibits, photography, art, dance and music.
The Refugee Communities History Project is being led by the Evelyn Oldfield Unit in partnership with the Museum of London, London Metropolitan University and 15 Refugee Community Organisations. It is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Trust for London. It will collect 150 life histories of refugees in London in order to highlight the social, economic and cultural contributions refugees have made to the city.
